    Something I found interesting while looking up beauty magazines was a certain pop-up that just wouldn't leave me alone! I tried to view the very popular Cosmopolitan magazine website and a Victoria's Secret ad popped up. It was a picture of a beautiful, healthy, blonde model dressed in sexy lingerie. I tried to close the ad but for some reason it just wouldn't go away. It seemed as if the ad was just taunting me, telling me this is what you need to look like! I couldn't even view the website until I got past her!

    Magazines attract and affect many different people no matter if they're young or old, female or male. Magazines such as Cosmopolitan, In Style, and Glamour target young women. On the cover of each of the magazines is a beautiful, thin, happy woman. Each cover of the listed magazines will have an article on staying in shape, doing makeup, and what's fashionable this season. A reader may feel like she must look like one of the beautiful women in the magazine from the size she is, the hair style she has, and the clothes she wears. Most of the magazines will even have a step by step on exactly how to achieve that look. Men have to also live up to the standards in magazines such as Men's Health, Men's Journal, and GQ. All the men in these magazines are {victoria_ad.jpg}
    beautiful and each issue will feature a workout plan to achieve that sexy, muscular look. Magazines are a huge part of media that can affect a whole population. The ads and articles can influence people to want to look healthy, stay in shape, and overall be beautiful.

    Movies Impact on Society's Health
    There is a huge market for celebrity-endorsed products, which in turn, creates a need or want in our society. People can be influenced in many ways, one being Movies specifically. A study was done of smoking's impact on the viewer; the study came back with shocking results. If you saw a movie with smoking in it, you're twice as likely to become a regular smoker. Also the study reports that heavy cinematic smoking exposure might promote more advanced smoking behavior and that reducing children’s exposure to movie smoking could keep away the long-term health hazards of smoking. This goes along with the theory of exposing children to new controversial topics may influence them to try it for themselves. For example, a child may see an actress loose weight in a movie, but if that process doesn’t show the child a healthy way of doing so, they might try to repeat what they saw in the movies to see results. Same theory goes with clothing and style, what’s except-able to the average kid is a huge difference than what’s okay to wear in a movie (It is just pretend), but what happens when children can’t decipher what’s real or fake, and right or wrong? They are left to decide for themselves.

    Radio's influence on society's health
    Radio has the power to influence society with great ease as statistics show that 84.8% of people ages 12 and over listen to the radio on a daily basis. This information allows advertisers to believe that radio is a very valuable medium for promoting products. As an avid listener, I have picked up on some of the ways that radio influences our society’s health. For starters, I can honestly say that every time I hear a song that I really like, I turn the volume up and I become noticeably happier in a matter of seconds. Listening to a song that you love can even be a healing experience after a long day. This is a direct influence on one’s mental health, however fleeting. In a more permanent aspect, listening to ads and the lyrics of songs played on the radio has the power to influence a person’s physical appearance as well. For example, say a young woman is listening to a pop station and hears an advertisement for laser hair removal or a line in a song where a man is describing what his ideal girlfriend looks like. Her beliefs of what is acceptable and unacceptable in society may be altered and her ideas of the way a beautiful woman appears may be transformed into something completely different for the rest of her life. It would be hard to come by a person who finds anything negative about maintaining one’s appearance as long as that person were just as concerned about maintaining their health as well. Every medium makes a sizable impact on the public whether we realize it or not. The effect is not always positive, but from what I have seen, radio has only ever put me in better moods by playing the songs I love and motivated me to maintain my figure and appearance so that I can get everything I want out of life.

    Television Influence On Your Health
    The common misconception of television is it only promotes unhealthy behavior. But, long gone are the days when watching television was just a mind numbing escape on the couch, now television can often motivate people to get in better physical shape. Television has the ability to educate the viewer on how and what they need to do in order to achieve their weight loss goals. Whether it is a competition weight loss show, healthy eating cooking show, exercise television, or hooking up a motion controlled gaming system, the message is clear; get up, be active, and become a healthier you.

    There are many network and cable channels with competition weight loss shows. A few examples are Bravo’s “Thintervention”, Oxygen’s “Dance Your Ass Off”, VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club”, and NBC’s “Losing It with Jillian Michaels”. The most popular and recognized of them all is NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”, which is in its tenth season. The premise of this show is simple, everyday overweight, physically unhealthy people compete to lose the most weight in a designated time frame. They are given trainers and the tools they need to reach their weight loss goals. The beauty of the show is not only is the competitor getting the healthy diet and exercise knowledge, so is the viewer. The show is packed full with diet tips, nutrition facts, and exercise regimens. Often the most helpful tips for the weekly viewer are the simple changes you can make in your everyday life that can have a big impact on your physical health. For instance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or how to make a favorite dinner dish healthier by swapping out a few ingredients, are things viewers can automatically enforce into their lives. “The Biggest Loser” television program has also expanded it’s product with cook books and workout DVDs so the person watching at home can become more involved in changing their own health. Not only are these shows enjoyable to watch because of the competition, but they offer physical education and promote healthy behavior.

    There are other television shows that promote healthier eating. You can look for these shows on channels like The Cooking Channel or The Food Network. Healthy cooking shows are becoming more popular as people are becoming more aware of what they put in their mouths. Shows like The Food Network’s “Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger” and Lifetime’s “Cook Yourself Thin”, are options for the at home chef to learn how to make a meal healthier for themselves and their family. Instructional cooking shows make eating a healthier diet more appealing and easier to the viewer. Shows like these encourage the viewer to take control of their own diet.

    Another type of show television offers is exercise shows. The recommended minimum amount of exercise for an adult is thirty minutes a day of moderate intensity aerobic activity, and an hour of muscle strengthening a week, according to www.cdc.gov. The average time of a television show is thirty minutes to an hour long. Participating in the workout of one workout show a day is enough to maintain healthy physical activity. With most people having a television in every room of their house it is easier for them to do a workout at home instead of having to go to the gym. Not only does television have channels with tons of exercise shows but now we have the On Demand feature available on our DVRs. This makes all kinds of workout shows like kickboxing, dance, crunch classes, and celebrity workouts, available at our fingertips with a touch of a button no matter what time it is.

    Finally, the new gaming system Nintendo Wii has taken the world by storm. Instead of just playing a video game on a television screen, you are now a part of the game. This gaming system promotes movement and physical activity in order to play some games, by using a motion sensor on the remote and on the systems console to track movement. The Wii Sports games that are included when you buy the system have the player moving like they are actually playing a game of tennis, fighting in a boxing match, or hitting a baseball. All the movement increases the player’s heart rate and body temperature which is good for the body. For example, in a paper in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Graves and colleagues report that teenagers expend nearly twice as many calories when playing Wii tennis or Wii boxing as they do when sitting passively. There are also other fitness and lifestyle games available for purchase that are more geared toward individual interests, like Dance Dance Revolution, and The Biggest Loser Challenge. The Wii gaming system also expanded into its own fitness product, the Wii Fit. With the purchase of the expansion pack and Wii Fit games you are instructed in your own personal workout at your home. With the popularity of the Wii other companies have seen the benefits of motion sensor gaming system and have developed their own. Now more and more people are actually being active while enjoying their leisure activities.

    According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). Now television stations are taking notice to this fact and trying to turn this into something more positive by encouraging healthier lifestyles. Weight loss shows, healthy cooking shows, fitness television, and motion sensored gaming systems are available to you, now it is up to you to take advantage of what television has to offer in helping you become a healthier, better you.
